Pastor's Paragraph for November 22, 2019
NOVEMBER 22, 2019
Shirley and I have become a part of the Disciple Fast Track Bible Study of the Old Testament, being taught by Bishop Neil Irons and the Rev. George Barto. It has been great! I enjoy going back to those great texts of the Old Testament and allowing God to speak to me through them once again.
One of the texts from Isaiah 49:6 touched my heart once again. God spoke to the lonely exiles through Isaiah’s words and reminded them that even in their difficult situation of being absent from their beloved city of Jerusalem, they were still expected to be God’s witnesses. God says it much better than that through these beautiful words from Isaiah: “I will give you as a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth.” Jesus echoed those words in his Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:14, 16): “You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid … In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.”
Every part of our lives is expected to shine for God. There are no exceptions! This includes our finances! I have always been amazed at the number of Christians who are willing to be witnesses in every part of their lives except their finances. They are tremendous in their character, in their speech, in their outreach, and in their caring for others, but they do not want God to “meddle” in their finances. I am reminded what the person said several weeks ago when they were asked to pick up their stewardship packet in the Gathering Space – “No thank you!”
Clearly, they were saying to God, “It’s none of your business!” There is no light in that part of their Christian witness … just lots of darkness.
A word of encouragement to everyone reading this Pastor’s Paragraph: Allow Christ to use your finances as a light to His salvation! The way you spend your money tells us more about your Christian witness than you will ever know. Help Christ get to know better that part of who you are!
